Praised by The New York Times for its “singular generosity”, Battery Dance Company takes seriously its twinned artistic and social mandates by bringing great dance performances to the public, free-of-charge each year since 1982. The Downtown Dance Festival continuously demonstrates innovative programming. Perhaps the most extraordinary part of the festival comes directly from the participating dance companies themselves, who give of their time and talents with minimal remuneration. Battery Dance Company’s signature downtown community program, The DDF has featured over 200 dance companies to date, ranging in style from classical ballet to post-modern, Indian classical to Afro-Cuban.
Through DDF and its associated programming, Battery Dance Company seeks to promote dance as a connective tissue within the community, reflecting the vibrancy and variety of the world in which it exists.
